The Lodges of Headingley

The lodges of Headingley are the small houses at the gates of the grounds of large villas. Some forty lodges were built in and around Headingley throughout Queen Victoria’s reign. They were built encircling Headingley village, and along the great thoroughfares of Headingley Lane, Otley Road and Weetwood Lane, from Woodhouse Moor in the south up to the Ring Road in the north. Three-quarters remain.
As Eveleigh Bradford notes, the lodges “sit at the interface between public and private property, symbols of wealth, seclusion and of course exclusion.”
For information on the lodges, either click on the images in the gallery above, or click on the area headings in the catalogue below.

Photographs are by kind permission of Jerry Hardman-Jones (JHJ), Helen Pickering (HP), Richard Tyler (RT) and Leeds Library and Information Service (LLIS), whose copyright they remain.
