Whether the weather is sunny or chill,
The Headingley Postie rides over the hill,
And into the suburb that she likes the most,
To deliver her bag full of Headingley post . . .
A new book explores life in Headingley, accompanying a postie on her rounds, as she hears reminiscences by local people about its diverse people and places. She begins by chatting to a couple of residents about the history of Headingley, and then goes on to call on the home of the so-called ‘Headingley Miser’, before cycling through the grounds of what was once a zoo.
She cycles on, past the world-famous Stadium, and by the Cottage Road Cinema. She hears about some of the writers who stayed in Headingley – and an African Prince who visited Arthur Ransome’s family. Her last call of the day is at a local school named after the Shire Oak – legacy of the pre-Conquest days when Headingley was an important centre in its own right.
The post delivered for the day,
The Postie heads off through the trees,
And leaves her favourite part of Leeds.
